Palestine Quiz 1 - Palestinian Refugees

Palestinians have experienced several periods of major displacement, beginning in 1947-48 war, followed by a second major displacement in the 1967 war. Additional displacement has resulted from Israeli government policies and practices inside Israel and in the 1967 occupied Palestinian territories, including land confiscation, house demolition, revocation of residency status, and deportation.

The state of Israel opposes the return of Palestinian refugees based on the desire to maintain Israel as a ''Jewish state'' characterised by a solid demographic Jewish majority and Jewish control of the land.

This quiz aims to test your knowledge on the Palestinian refugees issue and to give you an insight into their unique 59-year struggle.

Good luck!

OK, I got 85% or whatever, but there was one question which I felt was misleading. The number of Palestinian refugees is not a certain number; I took it to mean number of refugees registered with UNRWA. I feel I know a lot about the refugee issue, but I think this presentation would be aimed at people who don't eat, breathe and sleep the refugee issue. We need to appeal to more people.

Well done everybody. Don't get annoyed if you get a low score. Look at the bright side of it: You've just learnt something new, and you know what your next step should be.

And the good news are: Almost 300 people took the quiz in the last 4 hours. We haven't even started yet!

Abed, I thought I mentioned "approximately". And the reason why I went back to 2005 was that it is supported with a thorough survey. I could have used any more recent number if I wanted to. Thanks for mentioning it anyway.

I got 55%. But I think your quiz could be improved by not requiring someone to know the resolution numbers, and other strictly technical aspects. I think you want to educate, not pound someone on the head like they were in a history class, no?

Well, I just got a ninety percent, but I took it again and got 100! I will post on my blog also so that more people will get to see this great learning tool. Thanks Akram for another outstanding work!

Anonymous, the reason why I put some numbers is that those are always repeated in the news but few people know what they actually mean. And come on, I was very nice when I wrote the questions :D I even thought of having another advanced quiz! But you did learn something new, didn't you?

Nancy, well done, 90% is quite impressive, I myself didn't score that high even after I wrote the quiz myself! No no, just kidding ;-)

Thanks for reposting it on your blog. It's an honour for me.

I would love to see the score of many citizens of the United States, including many of the journalists, news commentators of the media, members of Congress and even the President of the United States and the Secretary of State!!!!

I was unable to access the quiz. When I pressed the link to start the quiz a page appeared which said something like "forbidden, access denied". What is going on?

Jabal said...

To the curious Anonymous, you've good a task then. Why don't you forward it to all of those? I'm sure if you search the internet you'll find a list of all their cotnacts together.

Jabal said...

Christine, 70% isn't too bad. I'm confident your love for Palestine will encourage you to learn more from now on.

"I was unable to access the quiz."

Can you please contact me on info@akramawad.com with more technical details: Where are you trying to access the quiz from? What browser are you using? Are you behind a proxy?

My score was 65%...

We have the same problem with a foreign occupation and a forced displacement of people also here in our country Kypros (Chypre, Zypern). So, in some occasions I just knew what is the right answer, just from what my feeling of justice was telling me about the people of Palestine, and without the need for any special study.

The similarity of the two issues of Kypros and Filistin is very impressive. As in Filistin, also in our country they tried to impose a division on our people (both Turkish Cypriots and Greeks) even by violating such matters as the civil rights of property, or the right of free movenment (Kofi Annan plan), even if the essence of European Union is exactly the free movenment of people and goods.

Our peoples should come closer and support each other more.

Mohamed thanks for your comment. I have to disagree with you though. Neither of that you mentioned is Al-Aqsa mosque. The mosque is everything within the wall (including both mosques you mentioned). Many people get this one wrong by calling the building with the silver dome "al-aqsa mosque". The accurate name of that building is "Al-Jame' Al-qibli" because that's where the imam leads the prayer in the mosque. It was built by Abdul-Malik bin Marwan and finished by his son Al-Waleed.

But thanks for your care.

Κωνσταντάς thanks for your comment. I believe all people with just causes should work hand-in-hand to bring justice to their people and peace to the world. I have to admit though that I hardly know anything about the issue in Cypris other than that it's dusputed between the Greek and the Turkish and their people on the island. I should read more!

Salam Akram,

I got 95%, but what we want is to make everyone knows about the plight of refugees since 1948 until now, the fact is that the NAKBA is still happening and the terrorist state of Israel continues the same policy of ethnic cleansing but slowly some times, now we see another ethnic cleansing taking place in West Bank by building more and more colonies (illegal settlements) and make the life of Palestinians miserable and force them to leave by all means, the same applies for Palestinians in the occupied land of 1948, but by different ways.

Regarding the quiz, it's great, but I have a suggestion, to make links at the end of it clickable, and to add these 2 sites: http://alnakba.org and http://www.palestineremembered.com

I stopped after the first question.

There are LOTS more refugees than the ones you listed, some with bigger plights than the Palestinians. Armenians and Checheneans come first to mind.

I did ok with the quiz. But this site along with the questionnaire has a 2 giant problems. First of all, the term Palestinians didn't even exist until 1979 when Egypt refused to take the Gaza Strip during the Israel-Egypt peace negotiations. Secondly, in 1948, only a few of the "palestinians" were forced to leave. Most left at the request of the arab nations as they stated that it will only be until they distroy the Jews (which they failed at).
I know this might be embarrasing for you to see that you made such obvious mistakes, but better knowledgable than ignorant. :)

I stopped after the third question. This quiz is slanted and propagandistic. I have not learned anything new.

How many rockets did you fire today? How many bomb belts did you build? How much Jew hatred did you teach? How many Eurodollars did your leaders steal?

I got 65% my friend had a link to this page on his internet profile. I am not palestinian, I have learned a lot from taking this quiz.

Inaxi,
I got 70% and I learnt a lot more. I feel your pain and I am with you. I am Basque. How much do you know about the Basque strugle and our missery under Spanish police, judges and their laws? Okay, then, if you want to learn: www.gara.net and click on English if you don't speak Basque or Spanish. BTW Spanish and Basque are two completely different languages.

I did much better the second time I took it: Jumped from 60% to 90%.

I'd like to think I am savvy on the issue, but all those refugee camps confuse me.

Well, I scored 80%, not as well as I thought I would...
